Manatees are usually seen singly, in pairs or in small groups of half a dozen or fewer animals. From above the surface of the water, the nose and nostrils of the animal are often all that is visible. Manatees never leave the water but, like all marine mammals, must breathe air at the surface. A resting manatee can stay submerged for up to 15 minutes, but when swimming it must surface every three or four minutes.
