Chimpanzees are our closest living relatives and share more than 98 percent of our genetic blueprint. Humans and chimpanzees are also thought to share a common ancestor that lived some four to eight million years ago.

Although they normally walk on all fours (knuckle gait), chimpanzees can stand upright and walk. By swinging from branch to branch, they can also move quite efficiently in the trees, where they eat the most. Chimpanzees also usually sleep in the trees and make use of leaf nests.
